NSCC & Orangutan Facility

Project overview

Dearadh Zú is leading the landscape and habitat design and supporting the Multidisciplinary team, working closely with Engineers, Cost Consultants, Planners, and the project Architects HLM on the new Twycross NSCC facility.

The proposed development covers an area of land to the south of the zoo, approximately 1.64 ha. The scheme includes a new state-of-the-art Orangutan house with a second-floor visitor walkthrough, three outdoor Orangutan habitats, and a boardwalk. In addition, the master plan consists of a themed Asian Village, visitor viewing areas, several themed covered structures, and several new animal enclosures. The development also includes a new lecture theatre with views of the Orangutans, an education block and science labs, and a residential block and lodges. The above development also includes a car park, landscaping, and other associated works.

It is anticipated that construction will begin in Summer 2025, with an opening date set for late 2026.

Project features

The project includes three large outdoor landscaped enclosure spaces complete with varied topography and areas of tree, bamboo and shrub planting for animal interaction. Plants have been chosen to provide shade and cover, but also for their suitability for providing browse.. Additionally, several naturally forming branched tree structures will be created using felled and repurposed trees to provide nesting and climbing opportunities. These structures will form focal points in the outdoor habitats, and a series of 12m, 8m and 6m high telegraph posts, platforms, interwoven ropes, webbing and other natural deadwood logs will be introduced to promote animal movement and natural behaviours for these arboreal species.

Elsewhere, vegetated ditches, detention ponds, and native planting will add to the overall landscape enhancement and create new habitats whilst supporting the project's BNG aspirations.
